About the Mad About Saffron Project
With support from North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE), our farm is exploring how to grow and sell saffron in the Midwest.
In August 2018, farmers Kate Hodges, Rachel Tayse, and Lauren Hirtle planted 1000 bulbs outdoors and in containers in a hoop house. We are studying the weed management, labor needed, and market viability.
Learning From Farmers
In November 2018, we traveled to Northumberland Canada to visit True Saffron farm. Our gracious and generous hosts showed us how they harvest and trim saffron. Their model includes making saffron-infused sauces and selling saffron to regional producers.
Purchase Our Saffron
Our 2018 saffron crop was fully cured and ready for sale beginning in November 2018. It is now available for purchase at Clintonville and Worthington farmers’ markets.
